What I found most intriguing that night was the tone of the
conversation.
Sure, it was a party, however, these up and comers were unwittingly sharing their
views and values. If you listen closely
you'll notice that people can rarely utter a sentence
without it being loaded with their philosophy on life.
At this age, we are easily hijacked by our hormonally charged
instinct to find a mate and nest. This is often takes priority over career decisions.
But, when we are 20-something, we don't realize that it isn't so
easy to "figure things out later." Life hits hard and fast. Before you can say
"What did I do with my life?," you're 40-something.
If they could hear the regrets of my mid-career
clients, they might look at things differently. Just
like people who are now in their late 30s and up did before
them, these young professionals only planned their life to reach age thirty.
Interestingly, many young people recognize that they're floating in limbo
or follwing the herd off the cliff.
It's like being under a spell that you are semi-consciously aware of,
yet unable to wake from.
To get a glimpse of what your future will look like,
talk to a handful of mid-career people.
Which ones are fully alive, energetic, and
in love with their work? Which are more like a lifeless
doormat? Listen to the career philosopy each camp is
living by. Imagine yourself down the road in each of their shoes;
then decide which road you want to take.
